For the conscientious traveler, Montréal is a destination that not only makes sense, but also offers an exciting urban getaway in the bargain. Urban and eco? That’s right. When it comes to green initiatives, Montréal is a trailblazer.
First and foremost, Montréal is the first urban centre and seventh global destination to sign the National Geographic Geotourism Charter, underlying its commitment to the preservation, conservation and stewardship of its historic, cultural and natural assets.
In day-to-day life, Montréal’s eco-consciousness takes shape in ways as diverse as they are inspiring. Take, for example, the more than 500 kilometres of bike paths crisscrossing the city. For many Montrealers, cycling has become the transport mode of choice for getting to work and getting around on their free time.
With the introduction of BIXI, the city’s public bike system, more people than ever choosing pedal power, and visitors love the ease of taking in the city on two wheels. Montréal is proud of its title of “Best Cycling City in North America” from Bicycling, an American publication, and plans for even more bike paths are in the works.
Nature lovers of all sorts can enjoy over 17 parks, or 2000 acres of preserved land, including the magnificent Mount Royal, the city’s backyard and favourite escape for enthusiasts who happily immerse themselves in its abundant flora and fauna. And given that Montréal is an island, water fun runs deeps here, season after season.
Just outside the city, there’s even more to discover, with a panoply of local products to sample, a wine route that takes you to the heart of Québec’s thriving viticulture and endless outdoor activities that let you be at one with the outside world.
